Although not machined, it still is very durable. It is also light, which balances nicely on modern lightweight graphite rods. Orvis service is one of the tops around. You get what you pay for? In this instance you get more. There are weaknesses, but it's tough to quibble over what you get for the money. Definitely recommended.

This reel is an excellent value and a good reel for beginners. It is not as sturdy as I would like, and has some design flaws. My Gunnison G-2 is a much better reel, but it is also twice as expensive. I use the G-2 exclusively now with my 5-weights, and the Battenkill has been relegated to a backup role.

The design is such that it is relatively easy for the reel to be knocked out of alignment by dropping it, or banging it into a rock. Additionally, it is fairly easy to get the line or the leader caught behind the rim.

I watched my strike indicator go down for the last time that afternoon, because an hour and fifteen minutes later my four pound tippet gave way along with my stonefly, as I reeled in looking at my strike indicator and my pheasant tail beadhead, I asked myself did I use all my tricks and take it as far as I could go, I felt good on one hand but bad on the other.

The reel performed perfectly going to my backing once, I was truly in a war with that fish and had serious trouble ever moving him, but the reel kept ticking away like a rolex. Yes, I could have landed him in ten minutes with my seven weight rod and disc reel, but that would have taken the fun away from my best battle yet with the silver ghost. When I broke off in the fast deep current I could only hope I did everything possible an expert steelhead fisherman would have done. I hope the fish survived to taste the saltwater and wondered if I should have broke off a lot sooner to ensure the fishes safety. I feel the Battenkill is the champion among trout reels.

I've been using this reel for the past three years and it has been a workhorse to say the least. I've hooked steelhead, springs, coho, chums, and pinks - and the disc drag mechanism is easily adjustable for each species. The largest fish I've landed was a 40+ pound spring and the reel handled it nicely. Overall, an excellent piece of equipment for the price! I keep on thinking about purchasing a nice Hardy for my 8 wt rod (I've got Hardy reels for all my trout rods). But I just can't justify not using my Battenkill! I would definitely recommend this one folks!

Great all-round package for the price. Disc drag is smooth and easy to operate. Good line capacity. Attractive "traditional" look and feel. Can use it in saltwater too (although I haven't done this yet).

Anodised finish seems to wear off easily (keep away from rocks!). Printing on rear end of the reel is not engraved (what do you expect for the price). Also noticed some minor imperfections in the finish.
