Excellent value for a disc drag reel; good beginner's reel for fresh water. This reel is an excellent value and a good reel for beginners. It is not as sturdy as I would like, and has some design flaws. My Gunnison G-2 is a much better reel, but it is also twice as expensive. I use the G-2 exclusively now with my 5-weights, and the Battenkill has been relegated to a backup role.

The design is such that it is relatively easy for the reel to be knocked out of alignment by dropping it, or banging it into a rock. Additionally, it is fairly easy to get the line or the leader caught behind the rim.
